Social Worker (Polytrauma/TBI)

Incumbent serves as social worker coordinator for the Polytrauma/Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Clinic Program which provides services designed to assess and treat veterans who may have experienced a Traumatic Brain Injury. The Social Worker Coordinator is administratively responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Polytrauma/TBI clinic program providing both direct clinical social work services to patients as well as being responsible for the direction of patient care services within the program. The incumbent collaborates with the Polytrauma/TBI Clinic Program director to develop policies and procedures for program operation and prepares reports and statistics for the facility, the VISN, and national use. The incumbent manages data related to the program for on-going program evaluation. In conjunction with the Social Work TBI Program Team Leader, plans, organizes and directs administrative, operational, patient and personnel activities for the program. The incumbent is capable of practicing at the advanced Social Work level and has specialized knowledge of practice related to Polytrauma and Traumatic Brain Injury. Under supervision of the Polytrauma/TBI Program Director, the Incumbent coordinates day-to-day operation of the Polytrauma/TBI Clinic Program within the facility. As this is a multi-disciplinary program, the social worker is responsible to facilitate communication, collaboration and the delivery of services to patients between the multiple clinical specialists involved in Polytrauma/TBI patient care. The primary focus of this position is on the provision of comprehensive services to Veterans with conditions related to Polytrauma and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). The Incumbent provides social work services to Veterans who have suffered one or more Traumatic Brain Injuries which may or may not be coupled with other physical or mental health conditions in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Incumbent assumes a lead role in coordinating the care of Veterans, including facilitating referrals to appropriate specialists, assisting with identification of community resources, providing crisis management, as well as education and assistance to their families as it relates to the Veteran's care. The Incumbent is also responsible for managing and monitoring the Veterans' progress in the VA health care system to ensure timely assessment, treatment and access to appropriate services and resources. Must have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. Senior social workers must be licensed or certified by a state at the advanced practice level which included an advanced generalist or clinical examination, unless they are grandfathered by the state in which they are licensed to practice at the advanced practice level (except for licenses issued in California, which administers its own clinical examination for advanced practice) and they must be able to provide supervision for licensure. (COPIES OF LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH APPLICATION) May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation). Grade Determinations:
Senior Social Worker, GS-12 Experience/Education. The candidate must have at least two year of experience post advanced practice clinical licensure and should be in a specialized area of social work practice, one year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating progressively more professional competency. Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience. Licensure/Certification. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, candidates must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
(a) Skill in a range of specialized interventions and treatment modalities used in specialty treatment programs or with special patient populations. This includes individual, group, and/or family counseling or psychotherapy and advanced level psychosocial and/or case management. (b) Ability to incorporate complex multiple causation in differential diagnosis and treatment within approved clinical privileges or scope of practice. (c) Knowledge in developing and implementing methods for measuring effectiveness of social work practice and services in the specialty area, utilizing outcome evaluations to improve treatment services and to design system changes. (d) Ability to provide specialized consultation to colleagues and students on the psychosocial treatment of patients in the service delivery area, as well as role modeling effective social work practice skills. (e) Ability to expand clinical knowledge in the social work profession, and to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines pertaining to the service delivery area.
