Summary:
American Conservation Experience, a non-profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS), is seeking one individual to serve as a part-time Natural Resource and Youth Programs Assistant willing to dedicate 28 weeks to assist with the Natural Resource division with field work, science communication, youth and volunteer program communication, and outreach at John Muir National Historic Site.

John Muir National Historic Site in Martinez, CAThe ACE member's duties may also be at neighboring National Park Service units of Rosie the Riveter / WWII Home Front National Historical Park and Eugene O'Neill National Historic Site.
The John Muir National Historic Site, located in the East San Francisco Bay Area, preserves the home of John Muir one of America's most famous naturalists and conservationist as well as over 325 acres of native oak woodlands, grasslands and other natural lands once owned and maintained by the Muir family, including Mount Wanda.

Living Allowance:
The ACE Member is expected to contribute 20 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $280 / week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.
Housing:
Housing is the responsibility of the member and not provided by ACE or the NPS.

The candidate selected for this position needs to be available during morning hours Mondays through Fridays.
Position Description:
In support of the mission of the National Park Service, the fundamental work conducted by the ACE Member will help the park with field research and monitoring, and connect local youth and volunteers to natural resource conservation and environmental education opportunities through hands-on stewardship activities and in-class programming.
Specific duties will include:
Assisting with coordination and monitoring of day-to-day natural resource tasks and projects for student interns and volunteersCollaborating with various park divisions and staff to conduct youth and volunteer programsServing as a liaison between the park and local youth, communities, and park partnersConnecting local youth volunteers and interns to the outdoors and potential careers in the NPS and related environmental fieldsAssisting local educators in providing outdoor learning opportunitiesDeveloping new youth and volunteer engagement opportunitiesCoordinating natural resource conservation projectsMaintaining and enhance the cultural and natural landscapes of the park unitsConducting resource inventory and monitoring projects through restoring native and cultural landsRemoving invasive speciesCollecting biological dataConducting community outreach and engagementPromoting visitor education
Qualifications:
Required:
Deep interest in ecology, history, and respect for nature is criticalAbility to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, professional, contributing representative of ACE and the NPSMember must be able to provide own transportation to-and-from worksite base (John Muir NHS, Martinez)Ability to relate well with youth and volunteers in the field and serve as leader, mentor and role modelMust have effective communication skills with diverse audiencesAbility to perform duties, hike, and navigate on uneven terrain and work outdoors, in varying weather conditionsAbility to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation Must be between the ages of 18 to 30, Military Veterans up to 35 are encouraged to apply (This position's age limitations are a requirement of the Public Land Corps Act.

Preferred:
Relevant experience and/or a degree in environmental sciences, natural resource management, ecology, and other related field Experience with outdoor education and youth leadershipExperience with various field data collection methods using standard protocolsExperience in hiking and navigation on steep terrainAbility to work independently in remote areasStrong desire to enter the public service field as a natural resource professionalInterest in gaining experience in working with conservation agencies, educators, youth and volunteersBilingual applicants are encouraged and welcome - Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese are especially useful in this parkPlease note:
